Pet sweaters are designed to keep the main body of a pet warm in cold months. Typically these sweaters are used on dogs, but cats, ferrets and even penguins have worn sweaters.
Dogs, especially short haired or small dogs, wear sweaters in the months that are the coldest: those being late fall through mid spring. Small dog sweaters and larger breed dog sweaters are designed by measurements taken of the dog's body, from neck to waist, while also measuring the height of the dog. There are usually no holes to crochet or knit, as these sweaters are usually wraps that cover the dog's back and connect underneath the dog, or serve as a kind of canine pullover. Free dog sweater patterns can be had from the internet or more traditional dog sweater patterns may be had from any store that sells material having to do with crocheting or knitting for a low cost.
Cat sweaters are designed in basically the same way dog sweaters are, and the patterns for free cat sweaters may be had from the internet. Many dog sweater patters can be adjusted through appropriate measurement of the cat, so that a dog sweater pattern may be useful for cat. Ferret sweaters, for those ferrets that are taken outside by their owners, are made in the same way as cat sweaters are, and are used to keep the ferret's body warm.
Penguin sweaters are used not so much for warmth as they are to help penguins heal from traumatic injury, such as oil spills. Penguins have natural oils in their body to waterproof them and keep them warm in their frigid environment. When oil from oil spills penetrates the penguin's feathers it destroys the penguins natural ability to keep warm and waterproof. Also, when penguins clean themselves they use their mouths. This means that penguins ingest the crude oil that has been spilled and poison themselves. Turtleneck sweaters are worn by the injured penguins to keep them warm and to prevent them from ingesting the crude oil through cleaning themselves until they are properly cleaned and healed from injury.
